June’s Journey - Mobile Game review
(AD - I am working with June’s Journey as part of a paid partnership, however, all opinions are my own)
Here’s my review of June’s Journey - a compelling mobile game that’s perfect for book lovers and true crime fans.
I’m always on the lookout for a good mobile game - something that I can play while waiting for the kettle to boil, but won’t take up too much of my time.
Enter June’s Journey, a hidden object mystery game that’s set in the glamorous 1920s. Launched by Wooga in 2017, new chapters are added to the story every week, meaning that there’s always something new to uncover.
The story follows June, an amateur detective who’s trying to uncover the secrets behind her sister’s murder. Weaving through the streets of New York and Paris, the game has hundreds of hidden objects scenes to scour and clues to collect.
What I love about the game is that there’s so much to it - I enjoy hunting for clues and trying to master each scene, but I also love getting to decorate my own island.
Here’s how it all fits together: players progress through the story by completing ‘chapters’. Each chapter consists of five scenes which players will need to search and identify clues. These become more challenging as you progress. Some items are easy to spot, for example, they might be large or in the foreground, while others will be more hidden. This could be by blending into the background, being small in size or being hidden somewhere you wouldn’t expect.
Take a look at the video below to get an idea of how the item searching scenes work.
Players can increase the amount of points they earn by finding clues quickly and accurately. There’s also a handy lightbulb tool that can help out with those hard to find items!
Searching scenes rewards players with coins and materials that can then be used to decorate their own personal islands. The more buildings and decorations that someone has on their island, the higher the player’s level, which in turn, helps unlock further chapters of the story.
Of course, everything on the island has a 1920s theme, with special items that are on offer for limited periods of time. As the game progresses, players can unlock additional areas, which is definitely a motivation to keep on playing!
It’s also possible to connect with friends by visiting each other and gifting items.
It sounds like a lot, but you get used to it all quickly and I really like that there’s so much depth and different elements to the gameplay.
As with many mobile games, players have a limited amount of energy that must be spent on searching scenes. When this runs out, players need to either wait for it to recharge or purchase energy packages at their own cost. This is actually something that I really like about the game, as it stops me from becoming too obsessed and spending all of my free time playing it and getting nothing else done.
Instead, I am encouraged to visit the game regularly and in bite sized chunks. This makes it ideal for squeezing into the quiet moments of everyday life, like waiting for the oven to heat up or the kettle to boil before making a cup of tea.
The game itself is completely free to play, and while there are plenty of extras that players can purchase if they want to, this is totally optional. There’s nothing more frustrating than diving into a fun mobile game and finding out that you can’t progress without spending real money!
